Code of conduct

This code of conduct applies to all parties within Ju Jitsufélag Reykjavíkur in all events and work organized by the club. Familiarize yourself with this code. 

  1. Conduct yourself in an honorable and courteous manner towards yourself and others.
  2. Respect privacy and discretion within the frame of the law.
  3. Do not in any way abuse your position of power or any kind of advantage you might have over others. 
  4. Practice equality and strive to respect the dignity of every individual or group regardless of religion, philosophical views, disability, social standing, age, sexual orientation, sexual identification or expression, in any part of society.
  5. Do not accept gifts or benefits that might tarnish your credibility, independence, or neutrality.

The practice of self-defense by definition includes the use of force. We respect our partners' boundaries and practice only within the framework set by the class teacher, and which our partners by participation agree to. Under no circumstances is the use of force or violence outside that framework tolerated.

  1. Be respectful in your conduct
    1. Treat every athlete the same, irrespective of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, political opinions, origin, religion or social standing. 
    2. Show respect for the individual, irrespective of their competence or ambition to succeed.
    3. Respect practitioners, parents/custodians, volunteers, coaches and other staff and promote all practitioners do the same.
    4. Respect the boundaries of each individual practitioner. Ensure a clear distinction between practice and violence in your class.
  2. Be honest
    1. Follow the rules of the sport, emphasize honesty and respect, and encourage practicioners to do the same.
    2. Promote a positive and healthy environment, free of narcotics and performance enhancing drugs.
    3. Exercise utmost confidentiality and caution when handling and possessing personal information. Exemption from the rule of confidentiality may only take place if there is a pressing need to do so and if this conforms to law
  3. Be a good role model both inside and outside the sports arena
    1. All practitioners deserve attention and equal opportunity.
    2. Do your utmost to see to it that the practitioners get the most out of their training
    3. Be fair, considerate and honest.
    4. Promote a healthy lifestyle by setting a good example.
  4. Respect the work and duties of the coach
    1. Make demands of yourself regarding use of words, conduct, punctuality, preparation and teaching/training.
    2. Show respect for the sport and the club and abide by the rules.
    3. Exercise ambition in your work and seek ways to expand and increase your knowledge
    4. Plan your work with respect to the competence and maturity of the practitioners.
    5. Be unafraid to seek collaboration with other coaches or experts.
    6. Take your leadership role seriously and use your position in a constructive manner.
    7. Keep the practitioners and their relatives informed about the training.
  5. Protecting the practitioners' best interests
    1. Ensure a safe environment and that the facilities suit the age and maturity of the practitioners.
    2. Place the health and safety of the practitioners at the top of your priorities, and refrain from placing them in situations that might jeopardize their health and safety.
    3. Pay attention and show care for those who have suffered injuries and those who turn to you because of mental discomfort.
    4. Refrain from placing yourself in a position of being alone with a practitioner.
  6. Violence is not tolerated in the sports movement
    1. Be alert and take necessary steps against any violence, i.e. physical, sexual and mental.
    2. Do not misuse your position and authority through sexual behavior or by other means.
    3. Refrain from making physical contact with practitioners unless this is a vital part of the training.
    4. You are obligated to notify the child protection service if there is any suspicion of a child having been neglected, abused or lives in circumstances that may jeopardize their health and development.

    6. Respect the boundaries and zone of comfort of your fellow practitioners. Safeguard the line between practice and violence.
  2. Be honest
    1. Follow the rules of the sport and conduct yourself with perfect integrity and courtesy, both towards yourself and others.
    2. Contribute to create a positive atmosphere and an environment free of narcotics and performance enhancing drugs
  3. Be a good role model both inside and outside the sports arena
    1. Be responsible for your own actions and conduct.
    2. Do your utmost in order to get the most out of your training
    3. Be fair, considerate and honest, and bear in mind that you are a role model for younger practitioners.
    4. Adopt and exercise a healthy lifestyle.
    5. Do not misuse your position and authority through sexual behavior or by other means.
  1. Remember your child is in sports for themselves, not for you.
  2. Encourage your child to participate in sports - do not force the child to do so.
  3. Encourage all children, not only yours.
  4. Be positive in your attitude, also when facing adversity.
  5. Show respect for all practitioners, the volunteers, coaches and other staff.
  6. Show respect for the children’s rights – every child is unique.
  7. Remember that the role of the coach is to train, while the parents’ role is to encourage.
  8. Inform in instances of teasing, mobbing or harassment
  9. Show respect for the club’s activities and be an active participant.
  10. Do not misuse your position and authority through sexual behavior or by other means.
  11. You should notify the child protection service if there is suspicion of a child having been neglected, abused or lives in circumstances that may jeopardize their health and development.

  3. Be a good role model for club members
    1. Always exercise exemplary conduct and behavior, both within and outside the club.
    2. Honor democratic rules and transparency in your decision-making and supervise in conformity with the Rules on Responsible Financial Management.
    3. Be fair, considerate and honest.
    4. Exercise ambition in your work and responsibility for your own conduct.
    5. Do not misuse your position and authority through sexual behavior or by other means.
  4. Respect the club’s activities
    1. Know the statutes and rules of the club.
    2. Safeguard the spirit and values of the club.
    3. Respect democratic work procedures.
    4. Show respect for sports, and respect their rules, customs and practices
    5. Exercise respect towards all practitioners, volunteers, the coaches and the staff, and promote that practitioners and the club members do the same.
    6. You are obligated to notify the child protection service if there is any suspicion of a child having been neglected, abused or lives in circumstances that may jeopardize their health and development.
